A brewery that recently opened its doors in Columbus, Ohio, has become the first company in the U.S. to offer paid parental leave — for dog parents, that is.
BrewDog, which is based in Scotland, announced its new policy last week.
“Yes, having dogs in our offices makes everyone else more chilled and relaxed – but we know only too well that having a new arrival – whether a mewling pup or unsettled rescue dog – can be stressful for human and hound both. So we are becoming the first in our industry to give our staff a working week’s leave on us to help settle a new furry family member into their home.”
It’s unacceptable that so many employers in the U.S. won’t offer a single day of paid leave to employees with a new child. A human child. Many of these workers are new mothers who are recovering from a vaginal delivery or a c-section. Their bodies are bleeding, torn and needing time to heal. They have looming medical bills added to the cost of raising a child. They need paid time to establish a bond and/or breastfeeding with their new child. To get used to this crazy new life without worrying about missing a paycheck.
I’m appalled to live in a country where paid puppy leave is even an option while paid parental leave is not a guarantee.

What do you think of this company’s puppy parental leave policy? Did you receive any paid leave when you welcomed a child to your family?
